Bible Study: Bishops, Pastor's, Preachers

Hymn: 791: 1,2,5 All People That on Earth Do Dwell Psalm 128 Creed (Back Cover) Lord’s Prayer (Back Cover)

THE TABLE OF DUTIES

To Bishops, Pastors, and Preachers

The overseer must be above reproach, the husband of but one wife, temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, not given to drunkenness, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money. He must manage his own family well and see that his children obey him with proper respect. 1 Timothy 3:2-4

He must not be a recent convert, or he may become conceited and fall under the same judgment as the devil. 1 Timothy 3:6 He must hold firmly to the trustworthy message as it has been taught, so that he can encourage others by sound doctrine and refute those who oppose it. Titus 1:9

Bishop = Overseer But every pastor serves as an overseer, though some pastors oversee overseers (Think archbishop)

What do they oversee? Doctrine

Preaching and Teaching The Sacraments (given in the way they’re instituted by God)

Pastor = Shepherd Preacher = Proclaimer of the Word Above reproach

Must be an example in Christian living Examples given in the text?

Recent Convert

What about managing his own family? Teaching them the faith

Living a moral life, not causing offense

Why? What does it mean to be conceited?

Related to Satan- he wanted to be like God, was arrogant The end result = Humility in the faith

Must be grounded in the doctrine and their own sinfulness

Trustworthy Message

Who did the teaching? How did the pastor receive it?

What’s the end result? Encourage in the truth

Refute those who oppose it
